Video Poker is a popular game that can be wagered on in casinos around the globe, or alternatively at home on your computer, using a web account. The rules are very simple and consist of the player trying to achieve the best mixture of cards possible in order to win cash. In this respect it is very similar as a normal game of poker, without the interaction with other players. Of course, techniques used in a real-life game of poker, like bluffing, will be irrelevant here.
The game of Video Poker begins when the player inserts credits (either tokens, tickets or cash) into the video poker machine and presses the draw button. A 5 card hand will then be electronically ‘handed out’ on the video screen.
The Video Poker machine also has hold buttons, and players will need to now decide which cards to hold and which to discard. For the cards the enthusiast wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any number of cards they wish, from all to none.
After the gambler has decided on which cards he or she would like to keep, the player will then press ‘deal’, which will mean that any new cards are needed they will be given out. The game is now finished, with the Electronic Poker machine analyzing the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands printed on the payout schedule.
Normally, the minimum winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money growing for each better hand. A common list of winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It is obvious that the pay out schedule can vary from machine to machine, so that skillful bettors are able to select the most profitable machine each instance.
Once the initial round has finished, the player can either choose to stay on and try to to increase their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any cash that might have been won. Additionally, a few versions of the game allow the gambler an opportunity to double their wins, in which instance a further hand is played. There are also variations between individual games, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other differing elements to enhance playability.
