The game of Video Poker begins when the gambler puts credits (either tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and pushes the deal button. A hand of 5 cards will then be electronically ‘given out’ on the screen.

After the player has selected which cards she wishes to keep, they should press ‘draw’, at which point any fresh cards will be needed they will be given out. The hand is now completed, with the Video Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it matches any of the winning hands printed on the payout schedule.
Typically, the minimum winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money growing for each and every better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It goes without saying that the pay out schedule can vary from game to game, so that experienced enthusiasts are agile enough to choose the most money-making machine each and every instance.
Once the initial round has completed, the player can either decide to continue on and try to to increase their winnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any credits that they may have won. Additionally, some versions of the game allow the bettor a chance to increase their winnings, in which instance a further hand is played. There are also variations between specific games, with some decks of cards including wild cards and other varying aspects to enhance playability.
