The game of Video Poker begins when the gambler puts credits (either tokens, credit slips or money) into the machine and pushes the deal button. A 5 card hand will then be "given out" on the screen.

The game is now completed, with the Video Poker machine scanning the cards to see if it matches any of the winning hands listed in the payment schedule.

Generally, the lowest winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money increasing for each better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It should be known that the payment schedule can change from game to game, so that knowledgeable gamblers are able to pick the most money-making machine every instance.

As soon as the initial round has finished, the player can either choose to stay on in an attempt to increase their earnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any cash that has been won. Further, several versions of the game give the gambler a chance to increase their wins, in which situation a further round is played. There are also differences between specific machines, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other varying aspects to enhance playability.
